Solution Design for FMCG freight forwarding

FMCG – Fast Moving Consumer Goods.  Industries or products that fall into this category are consumables like retail (apparel, merchandises) which are normally consumed by the consumers at a regular interval.  Most of the their  activities are engaged in operations, supply chain, production and general management.

The FMCG project I am working on is working on retail consumables and the customer is practicing active purchase order management as they have outsourced their Purchase Order Management.  The high level processes of this model works as follow:

  1. How the factory packs the shoes and hand over to Origin
  2. How the factory consolidate the pack and prepare the factory pre-alert notice to Customer at the Origin

Activities at Origin (Manufacturer’s Factory)

  1. Sending factory preASN file to Customer’s SAP
  2. Customer generates inbound 856 ASN to 3PL origins to inform the nos of cartons to be arrived at origin hub.
  3. 3pL origin performs physical receiving of cartons by scanning the HAWB of that shipment, together with the nos of cartons (using carton ID as identifiers)
  4. 3PL orgins and destination hubs update the shipment status of this shipment via freight system (tracking by booking number/HAWB).

After review the draft process, we have to consider to use the same scanner and application currently in used in our origin for one Customer.  2 changes to be done:

  1. For the scanner UI, we need to include a new screen to allow the operation to choose the customer profile before they starts to do scanning.
  2. Secondly we need to identify the output of the scanning files based on customer name/ID so that the system is able to identify which scanning records belong to which customer as this file will be later integrated with the booking system for validation purpose.
  3. Thirdly, an identifier in this file to identify the records that are to be validated by the booking system.

With the above considered, we will work on the type of exception handlings that the system or operations need to provide solutions to minimise impact to the daily operations.  Not to mention to consider the type of reports to review and determine the KPI.
